The American Red Cross is charged by Congress with providing relief for victims of disasters and helping people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Red Cross volunteers respond to disasters ranging from single-family fires to hurricanes and earthquakes. Red Cross health and safety classes help individuals and organization prepare for emergencies through first aid, CPR and other training. Red Cross also collects blood and handles communications between military personnel and their families.

Volunteers provide telephone assistance to callers needing information, referrals, resources, or someone who will listen and care. Maintains contacts numbers for AA, NA, Al-Anon, and after-hours connection to services for domestic violence, rape, and mental health emergencies. Maintains the 24-hour Spanish information hotline, Centro De Crisis/Linea De Ayuda Hispana at (252) 237-7626. Daily Reassurance Calls & MedCalls to senior citizens, disabled or challenged adults for a telephone visit, safety check, or reminder to eat a meal and/or take medications is a FREE service. Teen Help Line: (252) 243-6444 Monday through Friday from 4PM-8PM. Information and referrals for teens. Numerous projects for teens.

Wilson Emergency Management

Wilson Emergency Management takes the lead coordination role during major emergency and disaster situations. We coordinate resources on the local and state level to bring to bare on the hazards that may affect the citizens of Wilson County. During major disaster situations our staff work towards various disaster declarations. At times, we are tasked with making unpopular decisions that will affect the safety and well-being of citizens. We also respond to hazardous materials spills, large fires, and any unusual emergency event that occurs in the county. Our role is to obtain and provide specialized resources such as Hazardous Materials Clean-up Teams, Hazardous Materials Response Teams, Specialized Search and Rescue Resources, and any other specialized resource that may be needed on an incident. We’ve also been providing timely training on Terrorism Preparedness for emergency response agencies and the general public.
