Financial Assistance & Crisis Intervention helps with payment of utility bills, rent, medical expenses, transportation emergencies and other unforeseen emergency expenses. The Child Care Subsidy Program provides financial assistance for child care to eligible families to help them maintain fulltime employment. Amounts the state pays for each child depends on family circumstances, income, the cost of childcare provided, and the type of public funds from which the payment is made.

We protect children by providing services for families. This includes specialized services for abused, neglected, and/or dependent children, and those who are at imminent risk of harm due to the actions of, or lack of protection by, the child’s parent or caregiver. These services are designed to protect children from further harm and support and improve parental/caregiver abilities in order to assure a safe and nurturing home for each child.

Family & Children’s Medicaid/Health Choice (252) 206-4040
Medicaid is a federal program designed to assist families and children with the cost of healthcare. Health Choice is North Carolina’s free or low-cost health insurance plan for children ages 6-18 whose families cannot pay for private insurance and who do not qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid offers assistance to the uninsured with Breast or Cervical Cancer. Other programs offered are Medicaid for pregnant women, family planning Medicaid, and emergency Medicaid for undocumented aliens.

The primary purpose of adoption is to help children, whose parents are unwilling or unable to assume parental responsibilities, to become part of a new family. Foster care is a temporary living arrangement for abused, neglected and dependent children who need a safe place to live when their parents cannot take care of them. When the DSS believes a child is not safe, and a judge agrees, DSS takes custody of that child and finds a foster home for him or her. Length of stay in foster care varies from a few days to much longer.

Open to all school age youth in Wilson County with programs designed for the active youth. Club activities include homework help, arts and crafts and many others. Educational & technical and character & leadership programs are offered as well as programs on drug prevention, peer pressure and teen pregnancy, just to name a few. Drop-In activities such as pool, ping-pong, foosball, chess and checkers are played in the game room. Field trips are made to local points of interest such as fishing, cookouts and sporting events. For the athletic youth, there are organized teams in basketball, tackle football and cheerleading.
